Long-distance bike touring gear list · 1 month and up

A long crossing demands self-sufficiency: fixing things yourself, cooking, managing water and power over time. The list grows, but every item has to earn its place.

Here is a typical kit for a trip of a month or more. Weights are per unit; in remote areas, add water, food and some spare mechanical parts.

Frequently asked questions

How much gear for a long crossing?

Around 25 kg of gear is realistic in full self-sufficiency, before water and food. The priority is reliability and repairability, not minimal weight.

What spare mechanical parts should I carry?

Inner tubes, patches, cables, quick links, a few spokes and something to lube with: enough to reach the next shop, which can be far away.

How do I manage power over time?

A large power bank, the right cables and, on very long stretches, a way to recharge (dynamo or solar) keep you from running dry.
